Curated by Damian Smith and Kendrah Morgan, UNMASKED: SIDNEY NOLAN AND NED KELLY 1950 -1990 was a landmark survey of Sidney Nolan's life-long fascination with nineteenth Century outlaw Ned Kelly. Based on Smith's primary research as archivist for the estate of Sidney Nolan and his subsequent Master's thesis, completed at the University of Melbourne, the exhibition, which opened in 2006, celebrated the 25th anniversary of Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne's premier contemporary art museum.
